Throughout my life I have had the distinct feeling that I have been editing myself; both my presentation and my personality – cutting off my spiky corners to be kept in a socially acceptable box for easy consumption. I was often known as the good little girl, the quiet one, peaceful, hard working.. blah blah blah.. Which is not to say that I am not those things, but people have this funny way of being multifaceted and yes, much like many of us, I suspect – I have opinions, feelings, anger and joy, that wish to be expressed, and truths that long to be told.
Just like graffiti can be a way for disaffected youth to feel as though they belong in their world, tagging to show ownership in their space – my work is about breaking constricting social bonds that bind, owning my space (the canvas) and being truly authentic. Less editing of expression, less overthinking, less people-pleasing, more heart, more rhythm, more music for the eyes, more soul.
“A painter, who finds no satisfaction in mere representation, however artistic, in his longing to express his inner life, cannot but envy the ease with which music, the most non-material of the arts today, achieves this end. He naturally seeks to apply the methods of music to his own art.”
– Wassily Kandinsky
I hope you like my new work, but if you don’t, that’s ok too.. authenticity isn’t about mass consumption, it’s for those who ‘get it’.
.. and you know who you are!
